Arizona Jazz Academy European Jazz Festival TourFeaturing Paris and Jazz À Vienne (France), Geneva, Montreux Jazz Festival
(Switzerland), Madrid, San Sebastian, Segovia, Italy July 1-16, 2006Jazz À Vienne FestivalJazz À Vienne celebrates its 26th anniversary in 2006. It has grown over the
past two decades into the premier event of its kind in Europe. It is the
largest jazz festival in France. The Roman amphitheater is a state-of-the-art
venue, with immaculate sound. But Vienne would be a delightful place to visit
even if there were not a jazz festival. The town stands on the banks of the
Rhone River, and was one of the major Roman strongholds in Gaul. The place
breathes history and is immensely picturesque. The compactness of the town
leaves everything within walking distance and the narrow winding streets are
fascinating to wander. A temple raised to Augustus stands proud and unspoiled
in the very center, only a few yards away from the Church of Saint Pierre, one
of the earliest Christian monuments in France. Across the river lies the
Museum of St. Romain en Gal with a breathtaking collection of Roman mosaics.
The town's real treasure, though, is its people. They enter into the spirit
of the festival with gusto and lay on the warmest of welcomes for visitors.
Jazz À Vienne is undoubtedly the friendliest, best organized, most
relaxed and
musically rewarding jazz festival anywhere. The biggest names in jazz have it
pencilled into their calendars as one of the best bookings on the circuit.
Performers at the 2000 Jazz À Vienne Festival included: the Lincoln
Center
Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall,
Tony Bennett, Monk Tentet All Stars, Keziah Jones and Wilson Picket.Montreux Jazz FestivalConsidered the "King of all festivals," the Montreux Jazz Festival has acquired
world wide name recognition. Year after year, the top jazz, blues, rock, folk
and pop acts bestir themselves to appear in the intimate atmosphere of
Montreux, immortalized in Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water." In 2006,
the festival celebrates its 40th anniversary and welcomes over 170,000
visitors. Performers at the Festival have included: B.B. King, Elvis
Costello, Steve Nieve, Rickie Lee Jones, Princess Erika, Robben Ford, and the
Corey Harris Acoustic Trio. Reminiscent of the French Riviera, Montreux is the
most frequented resort on Lake Geneva and has acquired an international
reputation. The town stretches along the lake shores, facing south and
sheltered from the winds by the tiers of woods and vineyards that rise behind
it. It is an important cultural city, hosting, in addition to the Jazz
Festival, an International Choral Festival and the Golden Rose Television
Festival. Nearby summits offer extraordinary panoramic views. |
